W H A T  I S  P L A Y S T A R T ?

As part of The Mono Box’s commitment to supporting emerging theatre talent we are proud to announce PLAYSTART, our new writing initiative, for the third year. 

 

After last year’s successes, where all the plays were published in a collection from Oberon Books and most saw a further life at venues, The Mono Box joins forces with Hampstead Theatre to offer an exciting new writing showcase on a professional stage. 

 

PLAYSTART 2019 will offer four emerging writers and directors a platform to complete a 15-minute play, with the support and mentorship of a professional playwright. Each writer will be paired with a director and together these partnerships will receive free rehearsal space, facilities to cast actors, a producer and feedback from industry professionals to help them realise their work. This mentorship culminates in two performances in November at Hampstead Theatre where The Mono Box is an Associate Company. 

Our net is cast wide open – and we want to hear from even more voices, experiences and perspectives than ever before. Whether you are a first time writer or you've got a new idea brewing but especially if you haven't had a full-length play performed professionally before. 

Here’s how to apply:

H O W  T O  A P P L Y:

W R I T E R S 

 

You should prepare the following 4 documents: 

  • Submit your play proposal on one A4 side of paper. Please detail your idea, interests as a writer and what you’d like to get out of your involvement in PLAYSTART. 

  • Submit an example of your writing: this should be a first draft of your 15 min long PLAYSTART idea so we can see where the idea may be heading.

  • Please include your latest CV. 

  • Please complete an Equal Opportunities form (download below) 

 

Please note: 

  • Plays must not exceed 15 minutes and should be for 1-4 characters. 

  • There will be no/extremely limited tech available for performance so please bear this in mind when writing your piece.

Please make sure all items are submitted in PDF form clearly titled with your name. Applications submitted in the body of an email or an untitled doc will not be considered. 

D I R E C T O R S 

You should prepare the following 3 documents: 

 

  • Submit your interest, influences, intentions and what you’d like to get out of your involvement with PLAYSTART on one page of A4. This is our chance to get to know you!

  • Submit a CV or biographies. 

  • Complete an Equal Opportunities form (download below)

 

Please make sure all items are submitted in PDF form clearly titled with your name. Applications submitted in the body of an email or an untitled doc will not be considered. 

 

If successful writers and directors should try to be available for: 

 

WRITERS AND DIRECTORS MEET & GREET SESSION 

  • Saturday 28th September, 11am-1pm at Hampstead Theatre 

SHORTLISTING CASTING SESSION 

  • Sunday 6th October, 10-1pm at Hampstead Theatre 

 

ACTORS AUDITIONS WITH WRITER AND DIRECTOR TEAMS

  • Will be held at The Mono Box Studio in Bermondsey w/c 7th October or by your own arrangement. 

 

PLAY REHEARSAL DATES

  • Rehearsals will commence w/c 14th October for 4 weeks. It will be up to you to work with your team to rehearse according to your availability during this time. 

  • Rehearsals can take place either at The Mono Box studio or by your own arrangements. 

 

PERFORMANCES

  • Each play will be performed once at Hampstead Theatre Downstairs between 14th and 16th November with all plays performed again at a special event on Sunday 17th November.

 

SUBMISSIONS DEADLINE 

  • The deadline for applications for writers and directors is Friday 20th September, 12pm.

  • Applications will be read by teams at The Mono Box and Hampstead Theatre. 

  • All the required material should be sent in PDF with an Equal Opportunities form and titled with your name to: themonobox.playstart@gmail.com

  • Please note that emails sent to hello@themonobox or to the Hampstead Theatre directly will not be considered. 

 

WHEN WILL YOU HEAR?

The successful Writer and Director applicants will be informed by Wednesday 25th September. We will make contact with all applicants no matter the result as part of the #YesOrNo initiative. 

PAYMENT

This is a mentorship and opportunity scheme, offering professional support, rehearsal space and a showcase for free. The project is not currently paid but boy, are we working on it.

Casting breakdowns for the plays chosen for PLAYSTART will be posted on our website on Monday 30th September and you have until 5pm on Friday 4th October to apply for the role you feel right for. 

 

As much as we like knowing you’re excited, please do not express your interest before this time. We won’t reply to any emails about casting.
